Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian independence activist and political leader who was the main figurehead of non-violent civil disobedience movement against British rule in India.

He was instrumental in achieving India's independence through mass mobilization and non-violent resistance. Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which he called satyagraha, inspired political movements for civil rights and freedom across the world, including the American civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. He is considered as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century and is remembered for his principles of nonviolence, truth, and tolerance.
